Since Club Tattoo started in 1995. Sean and Thora have worked together to grow it into seven locations and a multi-million-dollar business with locations in the Phoenix area and Las Vegas. They have been married since 1998 and have two sons. They have worked together as full business partners, spouses, and parents who are successful on all fronts.
Writing their first "co-authored" book titled "Brand Renegades" in 2020. They couple signed a publishing deal with Entrepreneurial Press and released the book in May of 2021.
Sean and Thora have created many innovations in their field, including two patents for software and jewelry design. They have done several worldwide licensing and collaboration programs with other worldwide renowned brands including such brands as Oster, Bicycle, Etnies, WWD, Nordstrom’s, The Venetian Resort & Casino, Caesars’s Entertainment, Bold Face gear, and many more. Many people might say they have survived against great the odds to build a multi-million dollar business in an industry that was not looking to be recreated or main streamed. Sean and Thora have also overcome the odds against them with regard to the almost 50 percent divorce rate in the United States, which is even higher for couples who attempt to build and interact in a business together.
Sean Dowdell is known as the Tattooed Millionaire, which is also the title of his first published book in May 2017. It sold very well and got great reviews. Sean is well respected in his community and industry. He is connected with many well-respected leaders and innovators across many industries. In the past several years, Sean was interviewed for a wide variety of magazines and media including: Entrepreneur, GQ, Billboard, Success, The Washington Post, Parade Magazine, Rolling Stone, Readers Digest, Spin, Billboard, Kerrang, Revolver, LA Times, Las Vegas Weekly, Huffington Post, Buzz Feed, among many others. He has been featured on many TV shows and stations including CNBC, ABC, NBC, CNN, VICE, A&E; on radio by NPR, and by many podcasters including Adam Corolla, Zane Lowe, NPR, Inspired Media, and many more.
Sean has a passion for giving back and sharing his insight and experience with small businesses and other entrepreneurs. Sean also speaks to a variety of different audiences. He shares his successes and failures, what he’s learned from both, and encourages others to take calculated risks, and no matter what to be grateful, chase happiness not money, and give back.
From a young age Sean worked odd jobs to give back and help out his family. At the age of 18, he left his lower middle-class home in Phoenix, Arizona, to follow a passion for music. He was a drummer who ended up with three major record deals as part of a band called Grey Daze with his friend Chester Bennington. Later Sean discovered his passion and talent for tattoo art and piercing, which lead to creating and the business called Club Tattoo. Sean has become a proficient public speaker and has been invited to share his experience at numerous speaking events around the country. He is comfortable and entertaining on stage and passionate about his message as both an industry disrupter and community supporter.
Sean credits his success to: “Work. Work. Work. And then, more work.” As well as to the constant support and work ethic of his wife Thora. The other pieces of wisdom he shares with up and coming entrepreneurs is: “Don’t give up. Don’t listen to others who tell you can’t do something you believe in or want to do. Learn your passion and then learn how to live it on your terms. Create your own path and be willing to do more than everyone else around you is willing to do to make your vision happen.”
It’s not fair or accurate to call Thora the quieter or more submissive of the two business partners. She is not by any means either, but she has been less front and center in the media than Sean in the past. However, Thora is stepping out to speak up more often about her personal and business journey. Thora doesn’t work in the business. Thora is a full business partner. She is the force behind developing and expanding the Club Tattoo brand. Thora created and implemented, and still finetunes and updates, the business systems and processes that made the Club Tattoo business run profitably and successfully. She works tirelessly to protect the interests of not just the owners, but the employees from the front of the shop to the back, as well provide a consistent, comfortable, and professional customer experience. She stood strong through the negative feedback and pushed back from others while helping to make the Club Tattoo brand the multi-million-dollar enterprise it is today.
While Thora has not yet made a big push into the public speaking arena, she is loved and listened to when she does take the stage. Thora is looking forward to and embracing more opportunities to share her business insight, but also about empowering women business owners, especially those who may have been told: “No, you can’t do that,” “You’re not smart enough,” or are asked “Who do you think you are?”
One of the topics Thora wants to share more with women in business and young girls starting out is her philosophy about how: “‘I can’ is more powerful than IQ.” Having grown up in a male dominated world and told “No” more times than she wants to remember. Thora has learned and put into practice the philosophy that she gets to decide what she wants to do and she is capable of finding or learning a way to do it. Thora is self-taught, self-motivated, and a force to be reckoned with personally and professionally.
